Field Trips

AP Environmental Science 2011-2012

When: April 18, 2012

After spending much time learning about water quality and the multiple tests necessary to determine how good a water source is, our '11-'12 APES class set out to three different sites in order to discover how water quality from one site affects the water quality of the other sites. We tested the water in the Big Tujunga Canyon, the Hansen Dam Park, and the Hansen Flood Control Basin all within the span of a couple of hours. Our class conducted multiple tests and gathered much data (as you can see on the objectives, data collection, and results and conclusions pages) in order to determine the water quality. With these tests, we gained more knowledge and experience in this field of testing.

AP Environmental Science 2010-2011

When: May 12, 2011

On Thursday, May 11, our ‘10-‘11 APES class visited the Magnolia Power Plant and Waste Management Land, both of which are located in Sun Valley. Through these experiences, we were able to obtain a well-rounded understanding of the energy provision and waste management processes. At Magnolia Power Plant, our class started in the conference room with the high-positioned employees explaining the process and the history behind the power plant. After the Q&A session, we had received a tour around and inside the power plant as well as the control room. At the Waste Management Land, we had a tour on a bus that took us to various locations on top of the landfill that had been covered with soil. Our tour guide, Lily, thoroughly and enthusiastically explained the history and the course of the landfill.

AP Environmental Science 2009-2010

When: April 29, 2010

What processes do a water treatment plant use to treat water?
How does the water treatment plant control and monitor the water it treats, and how does it affect the local water?
These are some of the questions that propelled the '09-'10 APES class's investigation of the LA River and tour of the Glendale Water Treatment Plant. In just one day, our class preformed a series of experiments to test the quality of the LA River's water and the treated water from the plant. In addition to our one day out in the field, there was a lot of work to accomplish back in the classroom to analyze the data we collected. After we looked at all the results and conclusions, we found our answers and came away with a better understanding of how a water treatment plant operates, the water it treats, and how to experiment in the field and back in the classroom.
